I had a picture of a fat cat sitting on an armchair with a blissful smile on his face, a pic I had planned to use as reference for a painting for a long time. I often looked at the cat, wondering what caused this content smile. I just knew I had seen that expression before. Then an image came to mind: I had been in Pori Jazz festival, at the Kirjurinluoto concert. Many people were sitting on the lawn in the exact same position, enjoying the music with that same expression on their face as the cat in the picture. Therefore jazz as the theme of the picture felt just perfect. But how to express jazz in a picture? Music notes felt too worn as an idea. Just for fun I tried different musical instruments but nothing felt right. Until finally I tried a trumpet, blowing the music right into the cat´s ears. I have to say I started laughing out aloud when I saw the effect. Clearly I had found the right instrument. Out of a whim I decided trying to paint this photo manipulation with a computer painting program - just because I had never done it before and I wanted to try it. I played with different effects for one evening until the picture felt just right.
So here you are: a work of art done by first combining photographs and then painting with the computer.
Minulla oli käytössäni valokuva pulskasta kissasta, joka istua röhnötti nojatuolin nurkassa tyytyväinen hymy naamallaan ja josta olin aikonut jo pitkään maalata taulun. Mietin, mistä tuo autuas ilme mahtoi johtua ja jostain tuli mielleyhtymä, että tuon ilmeen olen nähnyt ennenkin. Mieleeni nousi käynti Porin Jazzissa ja miten jazzkansasta moni istui Kirjurinluodon konsertissa juuri samassa asennossa, nauttien musiikista täsmälleen sama ilme kasvoillaan. Siispä kuvan teemana jazz tuntui aivan mainiolta. Mutta miten sen ilmaisisin kuvallisesti? Nuotit tuntuivat kuluneelta idealta. Kokeilin huvin vuoksi eri soittimia, mutta mikään ei oikein sopinut. Kunnes lopuksi koetin trumpettia, joka aivan kuin puhalsi musiikkia kissan korviin ja pakko sanoa että aloin nauraa ääneen tuloksen nähdessäni - olin selvästi löytänyt oikean soittimen. Ihan päähänpistosta päätin kokeilla tietokoneella maalaamista - ihan vain siksi että en ollut sellaista koskaan sitä tehnyt. Leikin eri efekteillä ja pensseleillä yhden illan, kunnes yhtäkkiä kuva tuntui juuri oikealta. Siispä tässä taideteos, jota luodessa on ensin yhdistelty valokuvia ja joka on sitten maalattu tietokoneella.
